About Vishu
Vishu is the new year festival of Kerala, celebrated at the start of the Malayalam month of Medam. In 2027 it falls on 14 April. It is also marked in parts of coastal Karnataka, where it is known as Bisu, and it comes around the same time as other spring new year festivals in India.
The heart of the day is the Vishukkani, an arrangement prepared the night before with rice, fruits such as jackfruit and mango, a golden cucumber, yellow konna flowers, a mirror, coins and a lit brass lamp. In many homes an elder leads each family member to see it first thing in the morning, eyes closed until they reach it.
Elders then give Vishukkaineettam, a small gift of money, to children and younger relatives. People wear new clothes called Vishukodi, burst crackers known as padakkam and share a vegetarian Vishu sadya on a banana leaf.
Tips for sending your wishes
- Send your Vishu wish early in the morning, since many families are up before dawn for the kani and busy with the sadya by noon.
- For Malayali friends, end an English wish with "Vishu Ashamsakal", the common Malayalam greeting.
- Share a photo of your own kani or konna flowers along with the wish, as it makes the message feel far more personal.
