About Govardhan Puja

Govardhan Puja is celebrated the day after Diwali, mainly in North and Central India. It honours Govardhan Hill near Mathura and is closely linked with gratitude for nature, cattle and the harvest. In tradition, the day recalls the story of Krishna lifting the hill to shelter villagers from heavy rain.

In many homes, families shape a small hill from cow dung or clay, decorate it with flowers and offer a large spread of food called Annakut, meaning a mountain of food. Temples prepare dozens of dishes, sometimes 56, and share them as prasad. In many villages, cows are washed and decorated.

The day is also known as Annakut. In Gujarat it often coincides with Bestu Varas, the Gujarati New Year, and in Maharashtra the same day is celebrated as Diwali Padwa.

Tips for sending your wishes

  • Send wishes in the morning, before families sit down for the Annakut meal and put their phones away.
  • Since the day falls right after Diwali, a combined Diwali and Govardhan Puja wish is a good way to reach people you missed on Diwali night.
  • For Gujarati friends, add a line for the new year, since many of them celebrate Bestu Varas around the same day.
