Gudi Padwa Wishes

April to June Updated 9 Oct 2026

These Gudi Padwa wishes are written for the morning when the gudi goes up at the window and the kitchen smells of jaggery and fresh puran poli. You will find quick lines for a WhatsApp status, warm notes for parents and cousins, playful ones for friends, and respectful greetings for colleagues and customers.

There are Hindi and Marathi wishes too, for relatives who would rather read their own language. Every line here is original, so pick one, add a name, change a word if you like, and send it before the shrikhand runs out.

About Gudi Padwa

Gudi Padwa marks the start of the new year in the traditional lunar calendar followed in Maharashtra and Goa. It falls on the first day of the bright half of the month of Chaitra, usually in March or April. In Konkani homes it is called Samvatsar Padvo, and in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana the same day is celebrated as Ugadi.

The festival takes its name from the gudi, a bamboo pole dressed in bright silk or cotton cloth, topped with an upturned copper or silver pot and decorated with neem and mango leaves, a marigold garland and a string of sugar crystals. In many homes it is raised at a window or on the terrace early in the morning.

Families clean the house, draw rangoli, wear new clothes and eat a little neem with jaggery before a festive meal of puran poli or shrikhand. Many cities hold shobha yatras, street processions with dhol tasha groups and women in nauvari sarees.

Tips for sending your wishes

  • Send your wishes early in the morning, since many families raise the gudi soon after sunrise and check their phones right after.
  • For Marathi-speaking elders, pick a Marathi wish rather than an English one, because it feels far more personal on a new year morning.
  • Attach a photo of your own gudi or rangoli instead of a downloaded image so the greeting feels like it came from your home.
