Longer Bhai Dooj messages

  • Every Bhai Dooj I think back to the two of us sitting on the floor, you fidgeting while I tried to put the tilak straight. We have grown up, moved out and changed in a hundred ways, but that morning still feels the same. Thank you for being my constant. Happy Bhai Dooj.

    WhatsApp
  • Dear Didi, you were my first teacher, my first protector and my first critic. Every year your aarti reminds me how lucky I am to have you. I hope this year gives back to you a little of the care you give everyone else. Happy Bhai Dooj.

    WhatsApp
  • This year I cannot be there to sit in front of your thali, and I miss it more than I expected. Put the tilak on my photo if you have to, and save me a box of sweets. I will be there in person next year, and the gift will be worth the wait.

    WhatsApp
  • To my brother who never says much but always shows up: thank you. For the late-night rides, the quiet advice and the money you never asked back. Wishing you a year of good news and calm days. Happy Bhai Dooj.

About Bhai Dooj

Bhai Dooj celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters. It falls on the second day of the bright half of the month of Kartik, and usually closes the five days of Diwali celebrations.

In many homes the sister prepares a thali with roli, rice, a diya and sweets. She applies a tilak on her brother's forehead, performs a small aarti and feeds him something sweet. The brother gives her a gift or money in return, and the family often shares a festive meal. Many sisters invite their brothers home for lunch on this day.

The festival has many regional names. It is Bhaubeej in Maharashtra and Goa, Bhai Bij in Gujarat, Bhai Phonta in West Bengal and Bhai Tika in Nepal, where it is celebrated as part of Tihar.

Tips for sending your wishes

  • If you cannot meet, send your wish early in the morning so your sibling sees it before the tilak time at home.
  • Pair the wish with an old childhood photo of the two of you, which tends to mean more than any forwarded image.
  • For Marathi-speaking siblings, use the word Bhaubeej instead of Bhai Dooj so the wish sounds natural to them.
