About Children's Day

Children's Day, known in Hindi as Bal Diwas, is celebrated in India on 14 November. The date marks the birth anniversary of Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first Prime Minister, who was fond of children and was affectionately called Chacha Nehru.

The day is mostly celebrated in schools. In many schools, students come in colourful clothes instead of uniform, teachers put on performances for them, and there are games, quizzes, fun fairs and sweets. Parents often plan a small treat at home, such as a favourite meal, an outing or a new book.

Beyond the celebrations, the day is a reminder of children's right to learning, play and a safe, happy childhood.

Tips for sending your wishes

  • Teachers can write a one-line wish on the board in the morning, then read a longer message aloud before the class party.
  • For young kids who cannot read yet, record your wish as a voice note or write it on a card with a drawing.
  • Send wishes to your grown-up children too; a Children's Day message from a parent is a sweet surprise at any age.
