About Bakrid

Bakrid, also known as Eid al-Adha, Eid ul-Adha or Bakri Eid, is one of the two major Eids celebrated by Muslims. It falls on the tenth day of Dhul Hijjah, the last month of the Islamic lunar calendar, and comes at the end of the annual Hajj pilgrimage. The festival remembers a story of faith and sacrifice, which is why it is also called the Festival of Sacrifice.

In many homes, the day begins with special morning prayers at a mosque or Eidgah, followed by hugs and greetings of Eid Mubarak. Families who are able to offer a qurbani, and the meat is traditionally shared among family, friends and people in need. New clothes, festive meals, visits to relatives and eidi for children are all part of the day.

Tips for sending your wishes

  • Send your wish on the morning of Bakrid after the Eid prayers, when families are back home and greeting each other.
  • Use "Bakrid Mubarak" or "Eid Mubarak" for friends and a fuller "Eid al-Adha Mubarak" for formal messages to clients.
  • If you are not celebrating yourself, a simple, sincere wish to a colleague or neighbour is always appreciated, so do not overthink the wording.
