About Chhath Puja
Chhath Puja is a festival devoted to the Sun and Chhathi Maiya, celebrated mainly in Bihar, Jharkhand, eastern Uttar Pradesh and the Terai region of Nepal, and by families from these regions across India and abroad. It falls in the month of Kartik, a few days after Diwali, and is also called Chhath Parv or Surya Shashthi.
The festival runs over four days. Nahay Khay begins with a ritual bath and a simple meal, and Kharna follows with an evening offering of jaggery kheer and roti, after which the main fast begins. On the third evening, devotees known as vratis stand in rivers or ponds to offer arghya to the setting sun, and on the final morning they offer arghya at sunrise.
In many homes, families prepare thekua, carry bamboo baskets of fruit and sugarcane to the ghats, and sing traditional Chhath songs together.
