Longer Bihu messages for cards and close family
Every Bohag I remember waking early to watch the cattle being washed at the river on Goru Bihu, while the elders hummed old songs. Those mornings taught me that this festival is about gratitude for everything that keeps a home going. I hope your Bihu is full of that same gratitude and plenty of laughter. Happy Rongali Bihu to you and your family.
WhatsAppDear Ma and Deuta, this is my third Bihu away from home, and I miss the smell of pitha on the pan more than I can say. My gamosa is ready and I will join the video call for the evening songs. Save me some laru, and keep the dhol loud.
WhatsAppDear team, Bihu celebrates hard work paying off, and this year you have earned every bit of it. Please take the break to rest, feast and dance with your families. Warm Bihu wishes from all of us.
WhatsAppTo my Uruka crew: another year of building the bhelaghar, burning the fish and staying up till dawn around the fire. I would not trade those nights for anything. Happy Magh Bihu, and see you by the meji.

About Bihu
Bihu is the main festival of Assam and is celebrated three times a year, each time linked to a stage of the farming cycle. Rongali or Bohag Bihu in mid April marks the Assamese new year and the arrival of spring. It is the most festive of the three, with Bihu dance and songs, dhol and pepa music, cattle washed on the first day, known as Goru Bihu, and gifts of gamosa to elders and friends.
Bhogali or Magh Bihu in mid January is the harvest festival. On the night before, called Uruka, families and friends build makeshift huts called bhelaghar, cook a community feast and gather around a bonfire structure called meji, which is lit at dawn.
Kati or Kongali Bihu in mid October is a quieter occasion, when granaries are nearly empty. In many homes, families light earthen lamps in the paddy fields and near the tulsi plant.
Tips for sending your wishes
- Match the wish to the season: Rongali wishes in April, Magh or Bhogali wishes in January and Kati wishes in October.
- Add one Assamese phrase such as Bihur xubhessa to an English or Hindi wish, since it is warmly appreciated even if the rest is in another language.
- For Uruka night, send your wish in the evening so it arrives before the feast and the bonfire.
