About Mahavir Jayanti

Mahavir Jayanti is the most important festival in the Jain calendar. It marks the birth anniversary of Vardhamana Mahavira, the twenty-fourth Tirthankara, and is also called Mahavir Janma Kalyanak. It falls on the thirteenth day of the bright half of the month of Chaitra.

In many Jain communities, the day begins with prayers and a visit to the temple. Processions, often with a decorated chariot, move through the streets with devotional songs. Families give food, clothes and money to people in need, and many also support animal shelters.

The festival centres on the values of non-violence, truth, non-attachment and compassion for all living beings. It is widely observed in Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Karnataka, and is a public holiday in India.

Tips for sending your wishes

  • Keep the tone calm and respectful, since many Jain families spend the day in prayer and charity rather than loud celebration.
  • If you add an image, avoid pictures of food with onion, garlic or non-vegetarian dishes.
  • Send your wish early in the morning, before the procession starts, so it is read before the day gets busy.
