About Lohri

Lohri is a winter festival celebrated mainly in Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Delhi, and by Punjabi families around the world. It falls a day before Makar Sankranti, in mid-January, and marks the end of the coldest part of winter and the harvest season, especially of sugarcane.

In the evening, families and neighbours gather around a large bonfire. People throw popcorn, peanuts, til and rewri into the fire, walk around it and sing traditional folk songs. Bhangra and gidda to the beat of the dhol keep the night going, and the meal often includes makki di roti and sarson da saag.

Lohri is especially big for families celebrating a newborn's first Lohri or a newlywed couple's first Lohri, when relatives are invited and sweets are shared generously. In many neighbourhoods children go door to door singing Lohri songs and collecting treats.

Tips for sending your wishes

  • Send your wishes by late afternoon, as most families are busy around the bonfire once evening sets in.
  • For a baby's or newlywed couple's first Lohri, address the wish to the whole family, since the celebration belongs to everyone.
  • For Punjabi-speaking friends, close with 'Lohri diyan lakh lakh vadhaiyan' for a warm, familiar touch.
