About Baisakhi

Baisakhi, also spelled Vaisakhi, is a harvest festival celebrated mainly in Punjab and Haryana and by Punjabi and Sikh communities around the world. It marks the harvest of the rabi crop, mainly wheat, and the start of the solar new year in many parts of India. For Sikhs it is also a deeply significant day, as it marks the founding of the Khalsa.

In many homes the day begins with a visit to the gurdwara, followed by community meals at the langar. Towns and villages hold fairs, and people in bright clothes dance bhangra and gidda to the beat of the dhol.

Around the same time, other regions celebrate their own new year and harvest festivals, such as Bohag Bihu in Assam, Pohela Boishakh in Bengal, Vishu in Kerala and Puthandu in Tamil Nadu.

Tips for sending your wishes

  • Send Baisakhi wishes in the morning, since many families spend the rest of the day at the gurdwara, the langar or a local mela.
  • For Punjabi relatives, adding the greeting Vaisakhi diyan lakh lakh vadhaiyan to any English wish makes it feel instantly closer to home.
  • For farming families, a wish that mentions a good harvest or the fields means more than a general festival greeting.
