Dussehra Wishes

October to December Updated 9 Oct 2026

These Dussehra wishes are written for the people you will actually message this Vijayadashami: parents who still wake early for the puja thali, cousins you meet at the fair every year, the colleague who covered for you last week. Every wish here is original, so it will not read like a forward that has already done ten rounds of the family group.

You will find short lines, warm notes for family and friends, wishes for your partner and your workplace, plus Hindi wishes and Marathi Dasara wishes. Copy any wish, change a word to make it your own, and send it before the effigies go up in the evening.

Longer Dussehra messages for cards and close family

  • Every year we watch the tall effigy burn and cheer as if it is the first time. I think we cheer because each of us has something we want to leave behind in that fire. This Dussehra, I hope you let go of whatever has been weighing on you. Wishing you a light heart and a brave new start.

    WhatsApp
  • Dear Nani, Dussehra never feels complete without your stories on the terrace and the jalebis you hid for us in the cupboard. We are counting the days till we visit you. Wishing you a peaceful Vijayadashami, and sending the biggest hug from all of us.

    WhatsApp
  • To my team: this year we took on problems that looked bigger than us, and we beat most of them one by one. Dussehra is a good day to remember that persistence wins more battles than talent alone. Thank you for showing up every single day. Happy Dussehra to you and your families.

    WhatsApp
  • Dasara in Maharashtra means apta leaves passed around as gold, and I have always loved that idea. The real gold, though, is the people who stay. Thank you for being one of them. Happy Vijayadashami, dear friend.

About Dussehra

Dussehra, also called Vijayadashami, is celebrated on the tenth day after the nine nights of Navratri. It marks the victory of good over evil. In much of north India it closes the Ramlila season, and in many towns large effigies of Ravana, Meghnad and Kumbhkaran are burnt on open grounds in the evening, with fireworks and fairs. In eastern India the same day ends Durga Puja with the immersion of idols.

In Maharashtra the festival is known as Dasara. Many families decorate doors with marigold torans and exchange apta leaves as symbolic gold, called sona. In Karnataka, Mysuru Dasara is famous for its grand procession, and across the south the day follows Ayudha Puja, when tools, books and vehicles are honoured.

In many homes Vijayadashami is also seen as a good day to begin new ventures, start learning something or make a big purchase.

Tips for sending your wishes

  • Send family wishes in the morning, because by evening most people are at the fair grounds and networks get slow in the crowd.
  • For Maharashtrian friends and colleagues, a Marathi Dasara line that mentions apta leaves feels far more personal than a generic English message.
  • If a client or boss is starting new work on Vijayadashami, add a line wishing that new beginning well.

Questions people ask

When is Dussehra in 2026?

Dussehra falls on 20 October 2026, as per the central government holiday list. It comes right after the nine nights of Navratri, and in many cities the main celebrations happen in the evening.

What is a good short Dussehra wish?

Keep it to one clear thought. For example: “Courage today, kindness always. Happy Vijayadashami.” Short wishes like this work well on WhatsApp status and image cards.

How do I wish Dasara in Marathi?

The common greeting is “दसऱ्याच्या हार्दिक शुभेच्छा”. You can make it warmer with a line about apta leaves, such as “आपट्याची पानं देताना मनातलं प्रेमही तितकंच सोन्यासारखं राहू दे.”

Are Dussehra, Dasara and Vijayadashami the same festival?

Yes. Dussehra is the common north Indian name, Dasara is used in Maharashtra and Karnataka, and Vijayadashami is the traditional name for the tenth day. Any of these can be used in your wish.

What Dussehra wish in English can I send to colleagues?

Keep it warm and simple, and thank them for the year. For example: “Wishing you and your family a happy Dussehra. Thank you for a year of solid teamwork.”
