About Ugadi

Ugadi, also written Yugadi, is New Year's Day for people in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. It falls on the first day of the Chaitra month in the lunar calendar, usually in March or April, and the same day is celebrated as Gudi Padwa in Maharashtra.

In many homes the day begins early with a head bath and new clothes. Doorways are decorated with fresh mango leaf torans, and front yards with rangoli, known as muggulu in Telugu homes.

A key part of the festival is a mixture of neem flowers, jaggery, raw mango, tamarind, salt and chilli. Kannada homes call it bevu-bella and Telugu homes call it Ugadi pachadi, and its six tastes stand for the mixed experiences of the year ahead. Families also prepare sweets such as obbattu or bobbatlu, and many attend panchanga shravanam, a reading of the new year's almanac.

Tips for sending your wishes

  • Kannada speakers often say Yugadi while Telugu speakers say Ugadi, so matching the word to your friend's home state is a nice touch.
  • Mention bevu-bella or pachadi in your wish, because the six-taste mixture is what most people associate with the day.
  • Send wishes in the morning, as many families spend the afternoon on the festive meal and the evening at the panchanga reading.
