About Ramadan
Ramadan, also called Ramzan in India, is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar. During this month many Muslims fast from dawn to sunset, beginning the day with a pre-dawn meal called sehri and breaking the fast at sunset with iftar, often starting with dates and water.
Evenings are a time for family meals, extra night prayers known as taraweeh and visits to friends and neighbours. Giving to charity is an important part of the month, and in many cities markets near mosques stay busy late into the night with food stalls.
Because the Islamic calendar follows the moon, Ramadan moves about ten to eleven days earlier each year. It ends with the sighting of the new moon and the celebration of Eid al-Fitr.
Tips for sending your wishes
- Send your wish at the start of the month or just after iftar, when people are relaxed and checking their phones.
- Avoid inviting a fasting colleague to a daytime lunch, and offer an iftar plan or a later meeting instead.
- Save your Eid greetings for the end of the month and keep Ramadan wishes focused on peace and togetherness.
Questions people ask
How do you wish someone for Ramadan?
The most common greeting is 'Ramadan Mubarak', which means a blessed Ramadan. You can add a warm line, for example: 'Wishing you calm sehris and joyful iftars.'
What is the difference between Ramadan Mubarak and Ramadan Kareem?
Both are respectful greetings for the month. 'Ramadan Mubarak' means a blessed Ramadan and 'Ramadan Kareem' means a generous Ramadan, and either is fine to use.
Is it Ramzan or Ramadan?
Both refer to the same month. 'Ramzan' is the common pronunciation in India and Pakistan, while 'Ramadan' is closer to the Arabic and is used widely around the world.
Can non-Muslims wish Ramadan Mubarak?
Yes. A sincere wish from a friend, neighbour or colleague is usually appreciated. Keep it simple and warm, such as 'May this month fill your home with peace.'
What is a cute Ramadan wish for friends?
A light, friendly line works well, like 'May your sehri alarm never fail and your chai always be ready.'
