About Karwa Chauth
Karwa Chauth is observed by married Hindu women, mainly in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and Madhya Pradesh, on the fourth day after the full moon in the month of Kartik. Women fast from sunrise until moonrise for the wellbeing of their husbands, and in many homes unmarried women and some husbands keep the fast too.
The day starts before dawn with sargi, a meal often prepared by the mother-in-law. Women apply mehendi, wear red or bridal outfits and bangles, and gather in the afternoon to hear the Karwa Chauth katha while passing their thalis around in a circle.
When the moon rises, women look at it through a sieve and then at their husbands, offer water to the moon and break the fast with water and a sweet from their husband's hand. The name comes from karwa, an earthen pot, and chauth, the fourth day. It is also spelled Karva Chauth.
