About Janmashtami

Janmashtami, also called Krishna Janmashtami, Gokulashtami or Krishna Jayanti, marks the birth of Lord Krishna. It falls on the eighth day, or Ashtami, of the dark fortnight in the month of Bhadrapada in most calendars.

In many homes people fast through the day and break the fast after midnight, the traditional hour of the birth. Temples and homes decorate small cradles, sing bhajans and set up jhankis, which are tableaux of scenes from his childhood. Children are often dressed in yellow with peacock feathers. Mathura and Vrindavan see some of the biggest celebrations.

In Maharashtra the next day is Dahi Handi, also called Gopalkala, when teams form human pyramids to break a pot of curd hung high above the street. In parts of the south, families draw small footprints with rice flour from the doorway into the home.

Tips for sending your wishes

  • Send family wishes in the evening, before the midnight celebrations, when people are still checking their phones.
  • Save your Marathi dahi handi wishes for the next morning, when the pyramids go up and friends are out on the streets.
  • For a status update, a short line about makhan, a cradle or peacock feathers fits Janmashtami better than a generic festive wish.
