About Makar Sankranti
Makar Sankranti is the day the sun enters Makara (Capricorn), and in 2027 it falls on 14 January. It follows the solar calendar, which is why its date barely moves from year to year. It is a harvest festival that welcomes longer, warmer days after the peak of winter.
In Hindi-speaking states the day is closely tied to til and gud. In many homes people eat til ladoos, gajak, rewari and khichdi, and in parts of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar the festival is even called Khichdi. Rajasthan and Gujarat are known for kite flying from dawn to dusk, and many families take a dip in a river or give food and warm clothes to those in need.
In Punjab and Haryana, Lohri is celebrated the night before with a bonfire, songs, rewari and peanuts, so many families send Lohri and Sankranti wishes together.
