About Choti Diwali

Choti Diwali is the day before the main Diwali night in the five-day festival of lights. It is also called Narak Chaturdashi, Narak Chaudas or Naraka Chaturdashi, and many households link it to the story of the demon Narakasura's defeat, seen as light winning over darkness.

In Maharashtra the day begins before sunrise with abhyang snan, an oil bath with fragrant utane, and in many homes a bitter karit fruit is crushed underfoot. Families then share the first plates of faral such as chakli, karanji and laddoo. In Rajasthan and parts of north India it is known as Roop Chaudas, a day for self-care and getting ready for Diwali, while in Gujarat many people mark Kali Chaudas.

In Tamil Nadu and parts of the south, Naraka Chaturdashi is often the main Deepavali day, with early oil baths, new clothes and crackers at dawn. Across India, the first rows of diyas are lit on the doorstep in the evening.

Tips for sending your wishes

  • Send Marathi wishes early in the morning, since the abhyang snan and faral happen before sunrise in many Maharashtrian homes.
  • Choti Diwali wishes stand out because most people only send messages on the main day, so use this chance for a more personal note.
  • Mention the regional name your contact uses, whether Narak Chaudas, Roop Chaudas or Kali Chaudas, so the wish feels made for them.

Questions people ask

Is Choti Diwali the same as Narak Chaturdashi?

Yes, in most of India they are the same day, the one before the main Diwali night. It is also called Narak Chaudas, Roop Chaudas in Rajasthan and Naraka Chaturdashi in the south.

What is a good short Choti Diwali wish?

Keep it light and festive. For example: “First diyas on the doorstep, first sparkle in the eyes. Happy Narak Chaturdashi.”

How do I wish Narak Chaturdashi in Marathi?

The usual greeting is “नरक चतुर्दशीच्या हार्दिक शुभेच्छा”. A warmer version mentions the morning rituals, like “पहाटेची अभ्यंगस्नानाची लगबग, उटण्याचा सुगंध आणि फराळाचं ताट, नरक चतुर्दशीच्या हार्दिक शुभेच्छा.”

What is a Narak Chaturdashi wish in Hindi?

You can simply say “नरक चतुर्दशी की हार्दिक शुभकामनाएँ” or send a line like “छोटी दिवाली के दीये आपके घर में बड़ी खुशियाँ लाएँ।”

Should I send separate wishes for Choti Diwali and Diwali?

It is a thoughtful touch, especially for family and close friends. A short Choti Diwali wish the day before, followed by a fuller Diwali message, feels personal without being too much.
