Long Onam messages
Onam always takes me back to early mornings spent collecting flowers with my cousins, arguing over which colour goes in the centre of the pookalam. By noon we'd forget the fight and sit in a long row for sadya. I hope this Onam brings you mornings just as bright and afternoons just as full.
WhatsAppWherever you're celebrating this year, in Kerala or a small flat thousands of kilometres away, I hope you find a banana leaf, a bowl of payasam and people to share it with. That's all Onam really needs. Warm wishes to you and everyone at home.
WhatsAppAmmachi, the swing you tied to the mango tree years ago is still there, and the kids fought over it again this morning. We made your pal payasam and it was almost as good as yours. We missed you at the head of the sadya row. Happy Onam, with all our love.
WhatsAppThank you for all your hard work this year, from the late nights to the last-minute fixes. Onam is a time for full tables and full hearts, so please take a proper break and enjoy it with your family. Wishing you a very happy Onam.

About Onam
Onam is the biggest festival of Kerala and is celebrated by Malayalis around the world, across communities. It is a harvest festival that falls in the Malayalam month of Chingam, and it is linked with the legend of King Mahabali, whose yearly homecoming is welcomed with flowers, food and festivities.
Celebrations stretch over ten days, from Atham to Thiruvonam, the main day. In many homes, families make a pookalam, a flower carpet, at the entrance and add to it each day. On Thiruvonam, people wear new clothes, often the cream and gold kasavu, and share the Onam sadya, a vegetarian feast served on a banana leaf and finished with payasam.
Other highlights include the snake boat races known as vallam kali, the Pulikali tiger dance, the Thiruvathira dance and swings tied to trees.
Tips for sending your wishes
- Send your wishes on the morning of Thiruvonam, before families sit down for sadya around midday.
- For Malayali friends, adding Onashamsakal at the end of an English or Hindi wish is a warm touch.
- Pair your message with a photo of your own pookalam, even a small one, since people love seeing each other's designs.
