Longer Teej messages for cards and close family

  • Every Teej takes me back to Nani's courtyard, where a swing hung from the old neem tree and the women sang the same songs every year. I was too small to understand the words, but I loved the green bangles and the smell of fresh mehendi. Those afternoons are still the sweetest part of my monsoon. Wishing you a Teej that leaves you with memories just as warm.

    WhatsApp
  • To my husband: you may not understand why I spend three hours on mehendi, but you always wait patiently to see the final design. Thank you for the ghevar, the new bangles and the way you make every festival feel special. Here's to many more monsoons together.

    WhatsApp
  • Dear Maa, the sindhara box arrived today, and I sat with it for a while before opening it. The sweets, the bangles and your handwritten note made me feel like I was home again. I miss your Teej songs. Sending you love and a big hug until I see you.

    WhatsApp
  • Dear friends, this Teej let's slow down for a day. Dress up for no one but yourselves, sit on a swing, sing off key and eat ghevar without counting. You deserve a day of pure joy.

About Teej

Teej is a monsoon festival celebrated mainly by women in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana and Nepal. There are three main Teej festivals. Hariyali Teej falls in the month of Sawan and welcomes the rains and the green season. Kajari Teej follows about two weeks later, and Hartalika Teej comes in Bhadrapada, a day before Ganesh Chaturthi.

In many homes, married women keep a fast, dress in green or red, wear new bangles, apply mehendi and pray for a happy married life. Women gather to ride swings tied to trees and sing traditional Teej songs. Parents send a gift basket called sindhara to their married daughters, often with bangles, clothes, mehendi and sweets such as ghevar.

Hartalika Teej is also widely observed in Maharashtra and parts of South India as a day of fasting for women.

Tips for sending your wishes

  • Send Hariyali Teej wishes in Sawan and Hartalika Teej wishes in Bhadrapada, since they are separate days and many women observe both.
  • On a fasting day, send your wish in the morning or after the evening puja, when she is more likely to read it calmly.
  • If you are wishing your wife, pair the message with a small gift such as bangles or a box of ghevar.
