About Diwali

Diwali, also called Deepavali, is the festival of lights and one of the most widely celebrated festivals in India and among Indian communities abroad. It celebrates the victory of light over darkness and is marked on a new moon night in October or November.

In many homes people clean and decorate the house, draw rangoli, string lights, light clay diyas and share sweets with neighbours and relatives. Sending Diwali greeting cards was once a common tradition, and today many families send image cards on messaging apps instead.

The festival is known as Deepavali in much of South India, and the days around it include Dhanteras, Choti Diwali, Govardhan Puja or Padwa, and Bhai Dooj.

Tips for sending your wishes

  • Send image cards a day early or on the morning of Diwali, since phones and networks get very busy on the festival night.
  • Add a one-line personal note under the image so the person knows it was meant for them and not a mass forward.
  • Use Hindi cards for elders and family groups, and English cards for colleagues or friends who read English more comfortably.
