About Dhanteras
Dhanteras, also called Dhantrayodashi, is the first day of the five-day Diwali festival in most of North and West India. It falls on the thirteenth day of the dark fortnight of the month of Kartik, two days before the main Diwali night.
In many homes, families finish cleaning, draw rangoli at the entrance and light the first diyas of the season in the evening. It is considered an auspicious day to buy something new, so markets fill with people shopping for gold and silver coins, jewellery, steel and brass utensils, brooms and even vehicles and appliances. In Maharashtra, many families offer coriander seeds with jaggery, known as dhane-gul.
