Longer Durga Puja messages

  • Every year the Pujas remind me how much a city can change in five days. Streets turn into galleries, strangers share benches at midnight, and the smell of dhuno follows you home. I hope this Durga Puja brings you that same sense of wonder, and plenty of time with the people you love.

    WhatsApp
  • Dear Mashi, the house feels incomplete without your voice calling everyone for bhog. I am counting the days until we sit together on Navami and eat until we can't move. Until then, sending you a hug and all my Puja love.

    WhatsApp
  • To my team: this has been a demanding year, and you carried it with grace. Please take these Puja days fully for yourselves, with family, food and no work emails. We will be ready to begin again after Bijoya, rested and grateful.

    WhatsApp
  • This Durga Puja, I wish you the courage to start the thing you keep postponing and the patience to see it through. May the dhak remind you that some rhythms are worth keeping. And may the lights stay with you long after the pandals come down.

About Durga Puja

Durga Puja celebrates the goddess Durga and her victory over the demon Mahishasura, a story of good overcoming evil. It is the biggest festival of West Bengal and is also celebrated widely in Assam, Odisha, Tripura, Bihar and Jharkhand, and by Bengali communities across India and abroad. In Bengal it is often simply called Pujo, or Sharodiya, the autumn festival.

The main days are Shashthi, Saptami, Ashtami, Navami and Dashami. In many homes people buy new clothes, offer pushpanjali on Ashtami morning, share khichuri bhog and go pandal-hopping late into the night to see the themed pandals. Dhak drummers and the dhunuchi dance fill the evenings.

On Dashami, married women take part in sindoor khela and the idols are taken for immersion. Over the following days friends and relatives visit each other with sweets and greet one another with Shubho Bijoya.

Tips for sending your wishes

  • Send your wishes by Shashthi or Saptami, since many people are out pandal-hopping and slow to check their phones by Ashtami.
  • Use Shubho Bijoya only from Dashami onward, because it is the greeting for after the immersion.
  • For Bengali friends, mentioning their neighbourhood pandal or a favourite bhog dish makes even a short wish feel personal.

Questions people ask

What is a good short Durga Puja wish?

Keep it to one line that sounds like the festival, for example 'Dhak beats, new clothes, late nights. Happy Durga Puja.' Short wishes work best as WhatsApp statuses and for large groups.

What should I write for Maha Ashtami?

Ashtami is the day of pushpanjali and often the busiest day of the Pujas. A line such as 'Wishing you a Maha Ashtami of new clothes and old friends' fits well, and the Hindi section has Ashtami wishes too.

How do I wish Durga Puja in Hindi?

You can simply say 'शुभ दुर्गा पूजा' or send a two-line wish from the Hindi section above. On Ashtami, 'महाअष्टमी की ढेर सारी शुभकामनाएँ' works well.

What does Shubho Bijoya mean?

Shubho Bijoya is the Bengali greeting exchanged on and after Vijaya Dashami, the last day of Durga Puja. People say it while visiting relatives, touching the feet of elders and sharing sweets.

Is Sharodiya the same as Durga Puja?

Yes. Sharodiya means 'of autumn' and is a common Bengali way of referring to the autumn Durga Puja. 'Shubho Sharodiya' is a festive greeting for the whole season.
