About Eid
Eid ul Fitr comes at the end of Ramzan, the month of fasting, and starts when the new moon is sighted. In India the evening of the sighting is called chaand raat, when markets stay open late, women apply mehendi and families finish their Eid shopping. Eid ul Adha, known in most Hindi and Urdu speaking homes as Bakrid, comes about two months later and is centred on sharing food with relatives, neighbours and people in need.

In many homes the morning begins with the Eid namaz, followed by visits, hugs, eidi for children and plates of sevaiyan and sheer khurma passed from house to house.
