About Guru Nanak Jayanti

Guru Nanak Jayanti, also called Gurpurab or Prakash Purab, marks the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev, the first Sikh Guru. It is one of the most important days in the Sikh calendar and falls on the full moon of the month of Kartik.

Celebrations usually begin two days earlier with an Akhand Path, a continuous reading of the Guru Granth Sahib. Early morning prabhat pheris move through neighbourhoods singing hymns, and the day before the festival many cities hold a nagar kirtan, a procession led by the Panj Pyare.

On the day, gurdwaras are decorated with lights, kirtan continues through the day, and community langar serves free meals to everyone regardless of background. In many homes people light diyas and candles in the evening. The festival is celebrated widely in Punjab, Haryana and Delhi, and wherever Sikh communities live in India and abroad.

Tips for sending your wishes

  • Gurpurab and Prakash Purab are the most familiar greetings, so using either word will feel natural to Sikh friends.
  • Send morning wishes early, since many families leave before dawn for the gurdwara or the prabhat pheri.
  • For Punjabi-speaking friends, ending with 'lakh lakh vadhaiyan' adds a warm, familiar touch.
