Longer Makar Sankranti messages
Some of my happiest memories are of Sankranti mornings on our terrace, fingers cold and nose red, waiting for the wind to pick up. This year I hope you get a morning just like that. Eat one ladoo too many, lose a kite or two without minding, and stay out until the sky turns orange. Happy Makar Sankranti.
WhatsAppMakar Sankranti marks the turn towards longer days, and I can't think of a better reason to start afresh. Whatever felt heavy last year, let it drift off like a cut kite. Keep close the people who hold your string steady. Wishing you and your family a warm, sweet Sankranti.
WhatsAppTo my parents: thank you for every winter you woke us early, handed us warm til ladoos and sent us up to the terrace with a stern warning to be careful. We grew up, but the thrill of the first kite of the day never left. I hope this Sankranti brings you sunny afternoons and visits from everyone you love.
WhatsAppWhether you are watching a pot of Pongal boil over, chasing kites at Uttarayan or sharing khichdi with neighbours, I hope today feels generous. The harvest is in, the days are getting longer and there is jaggery in every kitchen. May this season give back everything you put into the year gone by.

About Makar Sankranti
Makar Sankranti marks the day the sun enters Makara (Capricorn). Because it follows the solar calendar, its date stays almost the same every year, and in 2027 it falls on 14 January. It is a harvest festival and welcomes the gradual return of longer days after winter.
The festival has many regional names. Tamil Nadu celebrates Pongal, Gujarat flies kites for Uttarayan, Assam marks Magh Bihu, Punjab has Maghi right after Lohri, and parts of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar call it Khichdi. In Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka it is simply Sankranti.
In many homes the day starts with sweets made of sesame and jaggery, such as til ladoos, chikki and gajak. Families fly kites from terraces, cook khichdi or Pongal, and visit relatives. In Maharashtra people exchange tilgul and say "tilgul ghya, god god bola", and women host haldi-kunku gatherings.
Tips for sending your wishes
- Send your wish early in the morning, before everyone heads up to the terrace and stops checking their phone.
- For relatives in Tamil Nadu, Gujarat or Punjab, mention Pongal, Uttarayan or Lohri so the wish feels personal to how they celebrate.
- Pair a Marathi tilgul wish with a photo of your own tilgul or kites when sending to friends in Maharashtra.
