Long Holi messages

  • Holi always takes me back to our old lane, buckets lined up by the gate and everyone pretending they didn't want to get wet. Those mornings taught me that the best days are the noisy, shared ones. I hope this year gives you a morning just like that. Happy Holi to you and everyone at home.

    WhatsApp
  • This Holi, let's be generous with colour and even more generous with forgiveness. If I've been distant or short with you this year, consider it washed away with the first splash. I'm grateful you're in my life. Have a wonderful, colourful day.

    WhatsApp
  • Dear Nani, the house feels different on Holi without your kitchen full of gujiya and your voice telling us to wash up before lunch. We still make them your way, with extra khoya and a little too much love. Happy Holi from all of us, and we'll call you as soon as the colour comes off.

    WhatsApp
  • To my team: thank you for showing up with good humour even in the busiest weeks. Today, forget the inbox, put on your oldest clothes and enjoy every bit of the fun. Wishing you and your families a safe and happy Holi. See you back with brighter ideas.

About Holi

Holi is the spring festival of colours, celebrated across India and by Indian communities abroad. It marks the end of winter and the arrival of spring, and is widely seen as a celebration of good over evil and of fresh starts.

The festival usually runs over two days. On the first evening, many communities light a bonfire known as Holika Dahan. The next morning, people play with dry gulal and coloured water, visit friends and neighbours, and share sweets such as gujiya along with drinks like thandai.

Regional names vary. In Maharashtra the bonfire night is called Holi and the colour day Dhulivandan, and some places play colours again on Rangpanchami. Mathura and Vrindavan in Uttar Pradesh are famous for their celebrations, and in West Bengal the festival is known as Dol Jatra.

Tips for sending your wishes

  • Send your wishes the evening before or early on Holi morning, because most people stop checking their phones once the colours come out.
  • For Marathi friends and family, a Dhulivandan or Rangpanchami greeting shows you know how they celebrate.
  • Keep your phone in a zip pouch while you play so you can still reply to wishes without coating the screen in gulal.
