About Eid
Eid is celebrated twice a year by Muslims around the world. Eid ul Fitr marks the end of Ramzan, the month of fasting, and begins once the new moon is sighted the evening before, a night known in India as chaand raat. Eid ul Adha, widely called Bakrid in India, falls about two months later and centres on sharing food with family, neighbours and people in need.
On Eid morning, many families attend the special Eid namaz and then visit relatives in new clothes. In many homes the day is built around food: sheer khurma, sevaiyan, biryani and kebabs. Elders give eidi, a gift of money, to children, and friends greet each other with hugs and the words Eid Mubarak.
Because the date depends on the moon, the actual day can move by one day from the printed calendar.
Tips for sending your wishes
- Send your wish once the moon has been sighted on chaand raat, because an early message can land on the wrong day.
- For elders, a short voice note saying Eid Mubarak often means more than a long forwarded text.
